¿Qué onda? Greetings you'll only hear in Mexico
Forget ¡Hola! — learn how Mexicans actually greet (and say goodbye), which slang is friendly, which is vulgar, and what to say instead. Includes free practice + premium challenges.
In Mexico, greetings matter. People warm up a conversation before getting to the point, and picking the right expression makes you sound polite, friendly, and natural. Some phrases are perfectly fine with friends but sound rude at work or with strangers — so context is everything.
Formal greetings (safe almost anywhere):
• Hola • Buenos días • Buenas tardes • Buenas noches • ¿Cómo está? • Mucho gusto
Informal greetings (friends, classmates, young people):
• ¿Qué tal? • ¿Cómo estás? • ¿Qué onda? • ¿Qué pasó? • ¡Hola!
Note: ¿Qué onda? is extremely common in Mexico — casual but NOT vulgar.
Slang greetings — handle with care:
• ¿Qué pedo? (mildly vulgar, friends only) • ¿Qué rollo? (safe casual) • ¿Qué show? (informal but fine) • Wey / Güey (mildly vulgar 'dude' — depends on tone)
Casual vs vulgar greetings — quick reference:
| Casual (safe with friends) | Vulgar (use with caution) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ¿Qué onda? | ¿Qué pedo? | What's up? |
| ¿Qué rollo? | ¿Qué pedo, güey? | What's going on? |
| ¿Qué show? | ¿Qué pex? | What's up? |
| ¿Qué tal? | ¿Qué tranza? | How's it going? |
| Amigo / Compa | Wey / Güey | Dude / Bro |
Avoid in formal contexts: ¿Qué pedo, güey? is normal between young friends but should NEVER be used with teachers, at work, with strangers, or in professional situations. Polite alternatives: ¿Qué onda? · ¿Qué tal? · ¿Cómo estás?
Goodbyes — neutral & polite:
• Adiós • Hasta luego • Nos vemos • Que tengas buen día • Cuídate
Goodbyes — informal Mexican:
• Ahí nos vemos (very common) • Sale (sounds good / okay bye) • Bye (yes, the English word) • Te veo al rato
Expressions that can sound vulgar: No mames (no way) · Está cabrón (that's crazy) · Chingón (awesome — vulgar origin) · Vete al diablo (offensive). Safer swaps: ¿En serio? · Está difícil · Excelente / Muy bueno · ¿Qué onda?
Pronunciation tips — Mexicans often clip 'Buenas tardes' to sound like 'wenas tardes'. And 'Güey' is pronounced 'way'.
