Los verbos que cambian todo: ponerse, quedarse, llevar, dejar y volver
Five of the most useful Spanish verbs, all of which change meaning with context. Learn the patterns behind ponerse, quedarse, llevar, dejar and volver — with everyday Mexican examples and eight guided exercises.
Have you ever tried translating a Spanish sentence word for word, only to realize it makes no sense? The verbs ponerse, quedarse, llevar, dejar, and volver express completely different ideas depending on the words around them and the situation.
For example, ponerse una chamarra means to put on a jacket, but ponerse nervioso means to get nervous. Likewise, quedarse en casa (to stay home) is not the same as quedarse dormido (to fall asleep).
💡 Key idea: These five verbs are everywhere in Mexican Spanish. Learning their most common patterns — not their one-word translations — will instantly make you sound more natural. In this lesson you'll explore their most frequent uses and practice them with everyday situations.
Quick reference — the meanings that matter:
PONERSE — To put on · To become / get · To start feeling:
| Spanish | English |

| **ponerse a estudiar** | to start studying |
- **Ponerse** + clothing → put it on. **Ponerse** + emotion or adjective → start feeling it. **Ponerse a** + infinitive → start doing something.
QUEDARSE — To stay · To remain · To end up:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| **quedarse en casa** | to stay home |

- **Quedarse** + place → stay there. **Quedarse sin** + noun → run out of something. **Quedarse dormido** → fall asleep, often by accident.
LLEVAR — To carry · To wear · To have been doing something:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| **llevar una mochila** | to carry a backpack |
| **llevar una chamarra roja** | to wear a red jacket |

- The pattern **llevar + time + gerund** is the magic one: *Llevo dos meses estudiando español* = I've been studying Spanish for two months.
DEJAR — To leave · To let / allow · To stop doing something:
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| **dejar las llaves en la mesa** | to leave the keys on the table |

| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| **volver a casa** | to return home |
| **volver a llamar** | to call again |
| **volver a ser el mismo** | to be oneself again |
- **Volver a** + infinitive → do something again. *Volver a intentarlo* = to try it again. *Volver a ser el mismo* = to get back to being yourself.
COMMON MISTAKES
| ❌ Wrong | ✅ Correct | Why |
